Item Black Studies(1970-03-24) Pitts, George Edward"At Bennington College the sense of immediacy which must pervade the establishment of a program of Black Studies diminishes in essentially a school of white students. That the school urges the student to pursue what he must is not being questioned in this statement. The immediate issue becomes one of Black students rather than of Black Studies. An increased number of Black students demands a sensitivity to his cultural needs as a Black person . Hence Black Studies. These needs after all were created by Black people."Item On the Draft Lottery for 1971(1971-10-19) Mikel, BruceItem Community Notice(1972-04-21) Hunter, Roberta; Wilson, Judith; Simms, Donna A.; Pitts, George Edward; Dixon-Stowell, Brenda"The black students of Harvard-Radcliffe have seized the administration building as of 5:30, Wednesday night...The black students of Bennington have sent a telegram to the black students at Harvard Radcliffe expressing support of their action. In light of the lack of attention given to the struggles of African peoples, we congratulate our Harvard Radcliffe brothers and sisters."Item Angela Davis Trial(1972-05-03) Kleiner, Gerald; Slessarev, Helen; Cartelli, Tom"The case is not only important because it points out the tainted nature of American political process, but also because Angela Davis embodies the basic struggles of our period - she is black and she is a woman. Her defense is in great need of aid and is currently $200,000 in debt. The Defense Committee to Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners has been supplying the funds for this trial which may prove to be the most expensive in judicial history. Contribute to fight repression!"Item Proposal for a Department of Black Music(1972-05-08) Cheatham, JimmyWe propose that a division called Black Music should be established, so that a comprehensive study of Black Music is possible. There must be at least three faculty members to start this division. Several teaching assistantships should also be established. This would enable musicians under financial stress to share their knowledge for the right to take classes for credit as well as a salary. Studies must be provided on an equal level in terms of space and quality with the other performing arts divisions in order t o provide an equally broad coverage of the subject.Item Sister Son/Ji(1972-06-01)Directed by Brenda Dixon Stowell. Performed by Esther Moses Ryvlin. With: Christopher Bishop, Julian Gerstin, Tommy Guralnick, John Hagen. June 7, 8, 9 Barn Studio Theatre 8:00 p.m.Item Open Letter to the Drama Division (1973-11) Frazier, Cindy"The sexist, rapist (that's a p) and generally womenhating productions that are perpetrated by the Drama Division are dangerous as well as disgraceful. From Nova Funk to Measure for Measure women are cast in either the role of luscious victim, dumb whore or vile hypocrite. As a literature student currently studying Shakespeare I was shocked that Measure for Measure should be the play chosen for production. Shakespeare has written far greater, and funnier plays, and cast women in strong and intelligent roles to boot. "The Dutchman" is another of these dramas-with-incentive-to-rape, But it's got a new twist: cast the white woman as the violent racist (that's a c), and you've got the perfect victim; that is, she deserves what she gets."Item Ted Joans Visiting Hadley Fellow in Black Music(1973-11)"Ted Joans, the visiting Hadley Fellow in Black Music, is at Bennington College from now until next Tuesday, November 13. He is a jazz poet, a painter, musician, thinker who went to New York in the early 1950s armed with a BA in Fine Arts from Indiana University, and attempted to earn his living as a painter."Item Studio Hours for Ted Joans(1973-11-08)"Ted Joans, Hadley Fellow in Black Music, will be available in his Studio (Jennings 212) on..."Item Reply to Cindy Frazier's Open Letter to the Drama Division(1973-11-08) Wilson, Judith"As a black woman who is also a literature student I am replying to Cindy Frazier's open letter to the drama division, not because I expect to be able to penetrate the veil of myopia in which Ms. Frazier's vision seems to be shrouded but because her letter raises issues about which I consider it regrettable that., in 1973, a purportedly intellectual community must still argue. But, in fact, Ms. Frazier has demonstrated that in 1973, at Bennington College it is still necessary to debate such matters as the relationship of art to society, and the relationship of black Americans, male and female, to white Americans, male and female."Item Ted Joans Visiting Hadley Fellow in Black Music Reading(1973-11-09)"Ted Joans, a Hadley Fellow in Black Mus ic will be reading in Tishman Hall tonight"Item Open Letter to Judith Wilson(1973-11-13) Frazier, Cindy"In your first paragraph you regret that the debate of "such matters as the relationship of art to society" has not been settled. You even imply that such a debate is anti-intellectual . This seems a shocking evaluation of both intellectualism and our times. At a moment in history when great literature is being produced by the members of society who have always been debased as anti-intellectual, ignorant, and uneducated (I mean authors such as Eldridge Cleaver, Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Gwendolyn Brooks) the relationship of art to society is under its most fascinating and important reevaluation in many years."Item Jean Racine's Phaedra directed by Larry Atlas(1974-03-10)Item Clayton Riley Hadley Fellow in Black Music Talk(1974-05)"Clayton Riley - Writer Critic - Hadley Fellow in Black Music will speak Wednesday, May 1st"Item Joanna Featherstone Show(1974-05)"The Drama Division presents Joanna Featherstone in a one-woman show of Afro-American poetry."Item Exhibition Opening - Joseph Beuys(1974-05)Item Black Music Workshop on The Solo(1974-10)"This Monday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the Carriage Barn, there will be a Black Music Workshop with members of Ensemble III. The Topic: "The Solo"."Item Journal of Contemporary Black Music Aesthetics(1974-10-08) Dixon, Bill"The Black Music Division is in the process of assembling manuscripts, articles, essays, art work, photos, etc. for a Journal of Contemporary Black Music Aesthetics. Since this Journal will be emanating from Bennington College it is quite appropriate that the design for the cover of this Journal should come from a member of the student body. This then is to announce a sort of competition, competition in the sense that the design deemed most appropriate for this Journal will be the one used."Item Black Music Division Workshop Jimmy Lyons on Improvisation(1974-11) Dixon, Bill
