Item Elizabeth Davis and the Library's Exhibit "Matriarchy: The Golden Age" (1974-11-12) Kirkpatrick, Joanna"When I signed the galley about Davis's fish story, I suggested to my co-writers that we make it clear that we though the library display belonged elsewhere on campus . One of the writers thought, however, that it was not up to us to suggest where to put it. So I should just like to say now that, contrary to the petulant reply of the Davis fans about censorship, I think we all thought the display was appropriate for more political locations hereabouts, such as the Women's Bulletin Board, or Commons, or as graffitti in the toilets. I think it was clear to everybody including the Davis fans that we were not censoring Davis nor were we out to burn anything."Item Elizabeth Davis and the Library's Exhibit "Matriarchy: The Golden Age" (1974-11-11) Tristman, Richard; Paglia, Camille; Salamon, Linda; Kirkpatrick, Joanna"The Crossett Library's current lobby-exhibit, "Matriarchy: The Golden Age," is a collection of archaeological and anthropological falsifications which do not deserve the recommendation of display in an academic library - The material for the exhibit--photographs of ancient artifacts and captions tLat purport to explain them--appears to be drawn from the confabulations of Elizabeth Davis's muddled, ignorant, perhaps out-and-out fraudulent book, The First Sex, whose "learning" and methods have been roundly discredited by every scholar who has condescended to review it."
