Evening Meetings / General Meetings, 1932-1941

Box 20-22. Evening meetings were a prominent part of campus life at Bennington during President Leigh’s tenure. These meetings, which took place 2-3 times per week, allowed for performances, readings, lectures, and discussions from across the academic disciplines. Evening meetings often featured guest lecturers, although performances and lectures by Bennington faculty and students were also featured. Notable lecturers and performers included: Carl Sandburg, Zora Neale Hurston, Robert Frost, Buckminster Fuller, John Dewey, and Jacques Barzun. Starting in the 1939-1940 academic year, these events were called “general meetings.” Documents relate to the planning and documenting of the evening meetings, and include correspondence, event programs and announcements, and schedules of meetings.
