General Meetings, 1947-1957

Box 11. General Meetings were a prominent part of campus life during the early years of Bennington College. These meetings served as a forum for performances, readings, lectures, and discussions from across the academic disciplines. Meetings often featured guest lecturers, although performances and lectures by Bennington faculty members and students were also featured. Documents relate to the planning and documenting of the general meetings, and include correspondence, event programs and announcements, and schedules of meetings.

Item The Bennington Conference on Contemporary American (program)(1950-04-16)The structure of the six day conference was: 1. Morning Meetings: Discussion groups in each of twelve student houses for students, faculty and guests. These discussions will be under the chairmanship of members of the Bennington College faculty. 2. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. Dr. Bunche spoke at Bennington's Conference on Contemporary America in April of 1950.
