So why does it persist? This talk will explore reviewing as an art of critical intimacy and offer practical advice to first-time reviewers. Christine Smallwood holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.A. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. Her reviews and essays have been published in many magazines, including The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Bookforum, and Harper’s, where she is a contributing editor and writes the monthly “New Books” column. Her short stories have been published in The Paris Review and McSweeney’s.
