Item Item Down with Miss NERT(1957-12-16)"The recent issue of Galley has in common with many recent student offerings in that organ a lack of practical suggestion which is characteristic of "constructive criticism." It is evident that certain members of the community are dissatisfied with the Non-Resident Term in its present form. To this observer the major sources of dissatisfaction are the recently shortened length of the term and the difficulty of obtaining jobs which are suitable."Item Tautological Tiddly-Winks(1957-12-17)"Does a relationship exist between a mechanical-scientific culture and its ramifications to general philosophies and theories in and about itself and its teachings, and the forms of spontaneous "creative" expression which comment on that culture from within? In other words, is Art becoming mechanized, mass-produced as well as mass-production conscious, is spontaneity becoming trite? Television gives us a somewhat starkly disconcerting clue to the possible answers. Here Culture can only sneak quietly out of the darkened room and once out, run madly to t he hills to join a Thoreau in his perennial game of tautological tiddly-winks."Item More Speakers(1958-03-31)"During my ten weeks in Boston I was happily surrounded by the extra-academic opportunities made available to me through the lecture halls of Harvard, Brandeis, M.I.T. etc., where as many as three or four speakers are scheduled for one evening. Why not more of this sort of thing at Bennington, where we have only a few speakers a term and occasional divisional workshops?"Item Misuse of Galleys and Constitutional Amendment(1958-04-02)1. "It is the responsibility of those who have won a freedom to preserve it. To have overcome the forces that oppose freedom of the press is meritorious, but it is of prime importance to maintain that press in keeping with the standards we have imposed upon it. When we begin to take a free press flippantly and are irresponsible in our use of it, we become easy prey for those who would manipulate us in our carelessness. Galley was re-instituted for the purpose of communication on the campus; as an outlet for the free expression of opinions. We sorely misuse the press by imposing, upon it and the community, personal petty gripes such as the recent "sinological" blurb. Furthermore, the most suspect of illegal literature is that which is unidentified or falsely identified." 2. "The proposers of the "new" constitutional amendment are experienced in the matter, having been voted down once before, and walked out on at the meeting they called to stir up propaganda. What they are doing now is a-thinly-veiled attempt to add to their "aye" vote by softening the blow, and by appealing to idealistic conceptions of what freedom is."Item Library hours and Community Government(1958-04-21)1. "There cannot be many greater ignominies than that of a college which denies access to the library during such times as Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and evening." 2. "It is a sad comment upon the entire Bennington Community who was very actively involved (either pro or con) in the Proposed issue, that the whole dissension culminated in the accepted 'relief' from responsibility that a definitive figure offered. Yes, we should have remained muddled until three o'clock in the morning valuing the privileges that the principles that our Community Government necessitate. The apathetic note upon which the meeting was terminated was a total negation of these very principles."Item Damaged Music Library Records and Myron(1958-05-01)1. Damaged records in the music library "The wonders of modern science! It has not only developed orthophonic high fidelity recordings with ideal dynamic full frequency range plus clarity and brilliance, but al so chemically treated clothes and brushes to prevent impairment of these miraculous disks. This was my first thought when I found three out of six records which I was taking out of the music library either scratched, warped or greasy." 2. His name was Myron."Item Vandalism on campus(1958-05-03)"We might well question the recent measures suggested in meetings of the Executive Committee to combat the wave of vandalism on the campus. All of these measures seem to this observer to accent as a given that these activities will continue, and that it is better to deal with the symptoms than with the causes."Item Item Kindergarten or College?(1958-05-20)"Sitting here as an impartial observer, I'm not going to be here for dance weekend, I find the going on a trifle ridiculous to say the least. The system of checks and rules and regulations would seem more appropriate in the first grade than at a college, any college, and especially Bennington."Item A Proposal on Mealtimes(1958-10-16)"One of the great impediments to efficient work at Bennington is the rigidity of mealtimes, and I would like to ask if something can't be done about making them more flexible."Item Do Women Get What They Deserve?(1958-10-31)"Tonight, at 9:00 o'clock in Commons Lounge, the College will tape a radio broadcast for Mutual Network.
