The purpose of the meeting was to unite the opinion of the entire college on policies and standards and to hear the reports of all College committees. The following students reported on the purposes and functions of the committees: Athletic Board - Elizabeth Johnson, Garden Committee - Helen Watkins, College Store - Mary Kent, Educational Policy Committee - Gretchen Hutchins, Heat and Ventilation - Louise Friedberg, College Publication Committee - Jean ConnerItem Community Meeting Minutes and Notes November 15 1932(1932-11-15) Carr, LouisePresident Leigh gave a brief explanation of Parliamentary forms. The chairman asked Mr. Leigh to explain the aims of the College. The Social Policies Committee presented for consideration a policy for community rules and standards.Item The Functioning of the College Program(1932-12-06) Leigh, Robert DevorePresident Leigh’s talk on the “Functioning of the College Program” presented at the Community Meeting on December 6, 1932. Leigh outlined his discussion of the functioning of the College plan into the following parts: the counselor system, attendance and obligations, use of the winter period, description of work of the Junior Division, problem of passing from the first two years to the last two years, granting of the degree and non-resident term NRT.Item Community Meeting Minutes December 6 1932(1932-12-06) Carr, LouiseFour motions were passed: 1. To give up the meat course once a week thus saving $50. 00 a month to help unemployment. 2 . To omit smoking during the evening meetings until the question period. 3 . To show consideration in playing the victrola during evening meetings. 4. All bicycles should be registered with the chairman of the Student Council. There are prowlers on the campus which makes sleeping out dangerous. 3. College material should not be used for sleeping out overnight. Any student so doing will be fined five dollars. 4. It was suggested that sun bathing be restricted to the further side of McCullough House and that bathing suits and kerchiefs be used only for this purpose. 5. It was also suggested that students should not sit on the window sills and lie on the floor of the library as the latter is one of the main points of interest to visitors and the above positions detract from its appearance.Item Community Meeting Minutes May 31 1933(1933-05-31) Carr, LouiseVoted to allow boys in student rooms only between twelve o'clock noon and six o'clock in the evening. Topics discussed in the conference: How much time from class work should. project work take, when both are in the same field? Absences from college interfering with students' work. Reports to parents and school heads. Late rehearsals . Arrangement of evening meetings for next year. Election of members to the Student Committee on Educational Policies. A paper titled "Suggestions to the Council" which was handed in by two students was read. This lead to a discussion of the policies of the Community Council .Item Community Meeting Minutes June 21 1933(1933-06-21) Carr, LouiseThe plan for next year's student election was read. The following announcements were made : 1 . No student may leave college before one o'clock on Wednesday, June 28, without special permission from Dr. Leigh. 2 . All faculty members are staying until the twenty-eighth except Miss Rossman, Mr . Jester, and M. Guiton. 3 . No bicycles should be taken into the dwellings .4 . No parents will be permitted in Community Meetings or House Meetings. Trustees may come if arrangements are made beforehand. 5. Automobiles and pedestrians may not use the Jennings Estate as a short cut . 6 . The reception committee for next Year's class will consist of this year's social committee plus students from houses which this group does not represent . 7 . Hypothetical cases for study next year may be submitted by any member of the community, may be anonymous, and must be handed in to Dr. Osborne by August 1.Item Community Meeting Minutes June 26 1933(1933-06-26) Carr, LouiseItem Community Meeting Minutes September 7 1933(1933-09-07) Carr, LouiseThe first Community Meeting for the second college year was held in the Theatre at 7:45 on Thursday, September. Elizabeth Shurcliff presided, starting the meeting with a welcome to the new students. The method of electing representatives to the Council was explained. Certain policies and regulations drawn up during the first year were read, also the standards and a few important rules. The latter included Dr. Osborne's regulations which state that any sickness must be reported to the infirmary immediately and that no trays may be taken to the dwellings without the doctor's permission. Miss Hill announced that there would be dancing for both faculty and students from four until five on the following Friday and Saturday. Mrs. Leslie explained the use of the library and the hours which it would be open.Item Community Meeting Minutes September 20 1933(1933-09-20) Pierce, CorneliaMargo Suter gave a report of the Commission on Religion. Eleanor Alexander and Mary Kent gave a report of the Store Commission. They presented the plan for a Cooperative Store to take the place of the college store.Item Community Meeting Minutes October 5 1933(1933-10-05) Cornelia, PierceIt was moved and seconded to have the member-at-large to the Community Council abolished. Carried. Mrs. Jones spoke about the Parent Education and Child Development Conference to be held on October 9 and 10. Mr. Thompson explained the fire regulations and made suggestions. Mr. Wills, from Bennington, spoke on the history of insurance. It was suggested that fire captains be elected in the houses.Item Community Meeting Minutes November 2 1933(1933-11-02) Cornelia, PierceIt was moved and seconded that the revised Plan for the Permanent Orgnization of the Bennington College Community be adopted . Carried It was moved and seconded to have the quiet hour in the Commons on Saturday nights 12 o’clock . Carried. The following announcements were made: 1 . Thatthere will be a dance recital by Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman on November 13 uncler the auspices of the Bennington Theatre Guild . Tickets will be free for Guild members 2 . That all untrained animals must be kept out of the Commons, living rooms ' and alcoves. Dogs over 4 months of age must have licenses . Licenses may be taken away if the rules are broken . There are a great many telephone calls of a trivial nature which interfere with the business calls of the College. People are therefore asked to do less calling and more walking Yvette Hardman presented the results of the questionnaires on evening meetings . Mr. Leigh spoke about the evening meetings of last year and explained the plans for this year. The following suggestions were made for improvement of evening meetings : 1 . That meetings start at 7 : 30 PM stop promptly at 8:15. The question period should stop at 9:00 . 2 . The E. P . c. members should meet with the faculty regularly and object if they do not like the speakers. 3 . There should be a better organization with the guaranty of a speaker. It would be nice to have each faculty member speak . The representative from the Publications Committee gave a report on the findings of the Committee.
