Soon after President William Fels came to Bennington College in 1957 he initiated a series of studies of the operations of the college. These preliminary studies prepared the way, in turn, for an extended exploration of the educational future of the college and which was undertaken by a committee made up of three members of the board of trustees of the college and four members of the faculty. This document, subsequently nicknamed The Golden Book, is the final report and recommendations of that committee to the president, the faculty, and the board of trustees. The proposals in this report were support by a majority of the faculty in 1961, but by agreement of the faculty the majority was not large enough, nor did it represent majority Divisional support, and the proposals were not adopted.en_US
