dc.description.abstractThis is a transdisciplinary course that investigates local and global food sovereignty. Incorporating activities such as collective soup making to intersect with academic research and theoretical reading, this course aims to enhance our overall understandings about the modern day food chain (i.e. industrial food production and systems of distribution). Through collaborative work we intend to establish a reciprocal learning relationship with various community organizations of the town of Bennington to cross-examine food insecurity issues of the 21st Century. Volunteer work hours at social service organizations such as Grater Bennington Interfaith Community Services (Kitchen Cupboard and Food Fit) and Meals On Wheels are required outside of the class time to become more aware of the situations and challenges of food insecurity in the local community. Students are expected to participate in collective cooking teams to prepare a series of convivial food events at which their reading materials and research summary will be creatively presented to the public to facilitate a rigorous dialog to promote food justice.en_US
