Abstract

Description

Sam Miller, Executive Director of Jacob's Pillow, spoke to me two years ago about and idea he had to create events on the Housatonic River. I had been making dances for ten years for different kinds of environments: a marble quarry atop a mountain, a frozen lake, tour of New England factories and a series at family farms. When proposed the project I was both excited and overwhelmed about the prospect of getting to know a river. I have always been interested in places, "environment" and the kinds of thoughts and feelings they inspire in people. I have enjoyed the responses of many audiences watching dances in very different kinds of spaces. Since I've lived in Vermont for the past twenty years, natural environments have been important to me. when I first travelled the Housatonic I felt like a "flatlander" but I soon began to feel a real connection to the river. Most sites have that effects on me quite quickly. it is as if they take on a sacred quality. I soon felt that the river I have met wonderful people and seen many things. In fact, the Housatonic River Valley is a microcosm of America: reach and poor, business and community work and recreation, environmental beauty and dumping ground, cities and farms. I know this project will only touch a small number of people on the Housatonic but I hope that each one who participates will contribute in some small way to the health and beauty of this wonderful river. Please join us in our year long celebration of the Housatonic. Susan Sgorbati
