Item Dissenting Opinion on the Report of the Faculty Committee on Student Government(1968-03-25) Golffing, Francis"I would like to register a degree of dissent from the Report of the Faculty Committee on Student Government. I feel that the student proposal, though far from perfect, and stressing only one aspect of a much broader issue, is deserving of serious and sympathetic consideration, beyond that offered in the Report. It is my belief that the student proposal--whether or not its authors now endorse it--was presented in good faith, with an adequate sense of responsibility, i.e. the resolve to enforce strict self regulation, as the other face of the coin autonomy, and that therefore it deserves to be tried out, in the belief that any defects would soon become apparent and remedies could then be sought in a democratic manner. Or even, put to the pragmatic test, that it might prove unexpectedly successful."Item Memorial Service for Dr. Martin Luther King(1968-04-05) Carini, Louis; Guy, Georges; Hanks, Lucien; Brown, Donald; Holt, George; Kirkpatrick, Joanna; Hansenclever, Irene; Lyon, Irving; Ricks, Arnold; Surette, Gerald; Rowe, Leonard; Supowit, Lee; Feeley, Helen; Van der Linde, Reinhound; Tristman, Richard; Shapiro; Westberg; Wilson; Witkin, Issac; Wittman, Josef; Wittman, Martha; Tillim, Sidney; Tate; Stickney, Rebecca; Hyman, Laurence; Hyman, Stanley Edgar; Delbanco, Nicholas; Pearson, Harry; Picco, Ulises Raul; Rosenblith, Eric; Sainer, Arthur; Schlabach, Anne; Smith, Barbara; Stroud, Peter; DeGray, Julian; DeGray, Margaret; Elman, Richard; Eskin, Stanley; Finckel, George; Finckel, Marianne; Flory; Golffing, Francis; Gray, Paul; Adams, Pat; Baker, Frank; Belitt, Ben; Calabro, Louis; Nowak, Lionel; Nowak, Laura; Wohnus, John; Woodworth, Robert; Teare, Robert; Montesinos, Nora"There will be a memorial service for Dr. Martin Luther King at the North Bennington Congregationalist Church today at 2:00 p.m. The college community will assemble on Commons lawn at 1:15. II) For second and possibly third year students a course in translation might be offered, dealing with the problem of transferring concepts from one language into another. III) It might b e advisable to have another first-year course in French, conforming even closer than the present to the structure of Basic Language and Literature. IV) I don't believe that there is a place in the Bennington curriculum for the ASTP "language and area" type of instruction. Prospective majors in fields other than literature-- social sciences, art, etc.-- should be provided with specialized types of language instruction suited to their needs. VI) Oral mastery of a foreign language is very desirable but should not be made the hub of our language program.Item Student Constituency Proposal Regarding Pets(1968-06-05) Feeley, Helen; Constitutional Council; Welter, Rush; Zenge, Judith; Elzey, Diana; Golffing, Francis; Meyers, Elizabeth; Pearson, Harry; Tate, Lisa; Ricks, Arnold"The Constitutional Council unanimously finds against the student legislation affecting pets. The Council accepts the Student Constituency ' s contention that students should have the privilege of keeping pets if they could show that pets' presence on campus would work no hardship on the Community, but it finds that sanitation, good health, and the proper maintenance of student houses are incompatible with their presence."
