Driving folk music, plaintive and haunting ballads about love and betrayal, rousing and spirited dance tunes, and gritty songs of conflict and the struggles of urban life are all part of a soundscape that tells the story of this extraordinary city and its people. Istanbul's population is diverse and constantly evolving. Communities that have called it home for centuries share space with more recent arrivals, including thousands of refugees from Syria. Featuring songs in Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), Hebrew, and Greek, David's Harp will spotlight the enormous cultural, musical, and multilingual richness of this cosmopolitan city on two continents. With an ambitious and adventurous line-up curated by Senem Pirlerand Joseph Alpar, the heart of Music Mondays from the Carriage Barn will be performances and research that highlight music and lives of Black, indigenous, people of color, queer, female-identified, and non-binary performers and artists. These virtual events are free and open to the public.
