Abstract

"We have had a great deal of difficulty in the last few years attracting qualified black students--for a number of good reasons. Bennington is expensive; there is no local black community to draw on; many potential students simply have not heard of the place. Moreover, our own curriculum has until recently not recognized the black experience. Next year, however, we will have an expanded black music program, under the direction of Bill Dixon, and several new black faculty members. Obviously, this is nothing to be overwhelmingly proud of, but it is a start. It does not, however, solve the problem of attracting black students."
