Abstract

Monday, Mar 25 2019, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM, DownCaf. Secret Drum Band is a percussion ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. Driven by four drummers, each song also employs an array of affected vocals, guitar, and synthesizers. Founder/composer Lisa Schonberg and composer Allan Wilson document habitats and soundscapes in their compositions, with the goal of drawing attention to issues concerning endangered species, habitat loss, and other environmental issues. Stylistically, Secret Drum Band pull from a unique vantage point, drawing allusions from Liquid Liquid, The Creatures, and Crash Worship, as well as the composers’ previous groups Explode Into Colors and !!! (chk chk chk). Secret Drum Band’s live performances are transportive, an opportune meditation on the relationships between humans, other species, and sound. All pieces are carefully scored by Schonberg and Wilson, allowing each musician to realize the complex and intricate arrangements in a live setting. Secret Drum Band's compositions have covered topics such as the endangered bees of Hawaii, the Mojave desert, and logging in Mount Hood National Forest. Secret Drum Band's live performances feature percussionists Schonberg, Wilson, Anthony Brisson, and Zanny Geffel, and a rotating lineup of ambient musicians including Sam Humans, Brian Mumford, and Marcus Fischer. Recent releases include their first full-length LP Dynamics and Schonberg's EP of her Amazonas compositions, UAU.
